Chapter Twenty Five

Dax woke to sunlight streaming through the window. Kastain was wrapped in his arms, his head resting on Dax’s chest. The soft puffs of air were lifting the hairs there, tickling him slightly. Kastain mumbled something in his sleep, and Dax tightened his arm, wanting to keep Kas there for as long as possible.

The heavy fog of sleep slowly lifted from Kastain as though the day was growing older in front of him. “Morning.” His voice was husky, no doubt from the harsh cries Dax wrung out of him through the night.

Dax trailed a hand down Kastain’s face. “Morning.”

“We need to get up. Carn is having his mating celebration this morning.”

“It’s still early, we have time.”

“Time for what?”

“To lie here for a few minutes. No politics, no pressing matters, no battles. Simply us lying here enjoying the peaceful moment with each other.”

“I like the sound of that.” Kastain shivered as Dax’s hand gently caressed his back. It seemed a totally subconscious action, as though Dax didn’t even know he was doing it, as though he simply needed the connection between them. “How soon did you know?”

Dax leaned down to kiss Kastain softly on the lips. “Know what?”

“Know I changed outfits.”

“As soon as… Cailen, wasn’t it? I mean, it was Cailen who took your place?” When Kastain agreed, he continued. “When Cailen walked out. The gait was wrong, there was a swagger to it you don’t have. Then there was the breadth of shoulders. Yours have a more regal pose. You have regal bearing, Cailen has the stance of a man who has little worries. His face, while covered by the mask, betrayed the differences. The way your jaw angles, the slight curve of hair behind your ear. Then there are your eyes. No one has eyes the color of yours. They are always alight with emotion. You can see the way you process everything in them. Oh, you hide a lot, but occasionally, if you look closely enough, your eyes flash with this fire. It’s captivating.”

“You could tell it was me so quickly?”

“Kas, I will know you instantly, wherever you are, whatever you wear, however you try to hide. Whether I can see you, feel you, or simply sense you, I know you. I would know you anywhere.”

“So the dancing, the drinking…”

“I was trying to court you. I was wondering how long it was going to take you to give in and say something. I saw you react when we first danced. You were confused.”

“I hated the idea of you having a stranger in your arms. I was jealous.”

“But it was you, not a stranger who was there. Your body close to mine, your arms on me, mine on you.”

“But I didn’t know you realized you were with me. I was so sure you believed you were dancing with a stranger.”

“No, Kas, only you. I was only ever going to dance with you last night. Of course, I needed to dance with Skern. Which was your fault, you know.
